What to do with a free day in Florence? There's so many choices, which is one of the reasons we wanted a free day here. At the last minute, we booked a tour to Cinque Terre, five picturesque seaside villages on the coast to the west of Florence, also known as the Italian Riviera.
It's a 2 1/2 hour trip from Florence, but through beautiful countryside. We passed by Carrara, famous, of course, for marble.
The five villages of Cinque Terre are centuries old, carved into the mountain, from the sea up. In each village are colorful homes, and vineyards terraced in the mountain. We started in Manarola.
Then we took a train to Riomaggiore, where we boarded a ferry, to see the villages from the ocean.
We had lunch at a little trattoria in Monterossa, and had some free time there to explore, and shop!
Our last village was Vernazza, and from there we headed back to Florence. It was a full day, but a beautiful part of Italy that we're glad we saw!
