Learning from the locals

Monday, May 9, 2016

Somehow we managed to tear ourselves away from the incredible vista of the Amalfi coastline, and took a tour to Tramonti, on the "green side" of Amalfi, in the Lattari Mountains. Our driver, Peppe, a local  from Tramonti, loved sharing his area with us.

Peppe picked us up in Positano (at the top of the hill, of course), and we drove along the coast to Amalfi, which was interesting because that's what we had seen from the water the day before!

This time we went a little further to Maiori and Minori, two incredibly pretty seaside villages.

Our first destination in the mountains was Azienda Agricola Anotolla, a family-owned dairy farm, where we learned about making mozzarella.

We even got to help them make the cheese, and then sample the very fresh product!

From there, we went to a small family-owned winery, Tenuta San Francesco. The family has grown grapes forever (one of their vines is 500 years old), selling the grapes or making wine for their family only, but opened as a winery in 2004. We had a very nice lunch and wine-tasting, and got to meet most of the family, including Em, the 5-month-old Jack Russell terrier.

We were back in time to enjoy one last evening in the incredibly beautiful Positano, we're off to Roma in the morning.

  1. Yum, mozzarella! Bet making that was fun! When you go to these places are you with a private driver? I don't know how you'll pull yourself away to come back home, except that I know you miss your children and puppies! I don't know if you've ever read books by Elizabeth Adler, but a number of them are set in Italy, including Tuscany, Positano, and the Amalfi Coast. If you like "light" reading, you can check her books out when you are home and have a yearning to be back. :-) I read Summer in Tuscany and felt like I was there...her scenery descriptions are so vivid, as were the food descriptions! OK, I almost felt like I was there... Enjoy Rome!!
