The Eternal City

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

The Romans believed that no matter what, Rome would stand, eternally. For more than 2000 years, they've proven to be right!

We left Positano early Tuesday morning, made our way safely through the Naples train station, again with our belongings intact, and arrived in Rome. We're in Rome! It seems like a dream. I've read much about Rome, and heard so much about Rome, and seen it in so many movies, and here we are. And I see that it's so much bigger than that!

Our hotel is near the Trevi Fountain, so after getting settled, that was the first place we headed. In the middle of the day, it was jammed with people, but it was the Trevi Fountain! And it glistens, it is so beautiful.

We're still working on the ultimate selfie!

I had us walking in circles to find a certain restaurant, and needed a crash course on the city. So we hopped on a bus! And we learned that there truly is another ancient ruin every time you turn a corner in Rome.

This morning we set out early for the Spanish Steps, only to find that it is closed for renovation. But beacause it was closed, no one was there! We had a lovely view of the city all to ourselves. We spent the morning wandering around the Villa Borghese, as Greg said, the Central Park of Rome.

This afternoon we went on a tour of the Colisuem, including the underground and the first three floors, the Roman Forum, and Palantine Hill. Being literally surrounded by objects that are more than 2000 years old is humbling. I hope the pictures show how powerful the sights truly are, I know it is etched in my memory.

More of Rome tomorrow, and we'll only be skimming the surface!
