Soaking up the flavor of the island - and shopping

We awoke to another Mackinac Island glorious morning.

What trip would be complete without shopping? Anne, Elizabeth, and I took a taxi into the city to visit some shops we had scoped out the day before.

Can you tell that Zeus, the horse on the left, is huge?
19 hands! The tallest horse on the island!

Hit and conquer was our style. The island is only open a few months of the year, and they need to do all the business they can while open. But the crowds . . .

After lunch Stephen went on a grand walk to discover the mysteries of the island.

There are two forts on the island, both from another era, and now part of the state park. Fort Mackinac was established in 1780 as a strategic British outpost. Fort Holmes was established during the War of 1812 to protect Fort Mackinac.

Anne, Greg and I decided last minute to hire a coach tour of the island. Mike and Mack and their driver showed us some beautiful sights.

The trillium are beautiful in the forest at this time of year.

After dinner, the setting sun cast a lovely glow from the front porch

We are off the island tomorrow, headed back to Detroit.
