America’s Summer Place

We were up and out early to see Lake Michigan and get a stamp at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Getting the stamp was easy, seeing Lake Michigan not so much! The weather just wasn’t cooperating, chilly in the 40’s, foggy, and damp. At the Coast Guard station we finally found the lake.

And we got a stamp!

The lilacs are amazing. I presume they are wild, beautiful purple and white shrubs that are huge. Just gorgeous.

Then we headed out to Mackinaw City to catch the ferry to Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel, our ultimate destination. As we approached Mackinaw City, the sun came out and by the time we got on the ferry, it was a beautiful day.

Still a little cloudy in this direction!

There are no cars on Mackinac Island, bikes and horses only. We took a carriage up to the hotel and spent the rest of the day learning our way around. It is a beautiful place! Stephen spent more time in the village than we did, and he describes it all as a cross between Colonial Williamsburg, Disney, and Myrtle Beach! But I think he likes it, we all do!

After a fantastic dinner in the beautiful main dining room (think Dorothy Draper and the Greenbrier throughout the entire hotel) and a pretty sunset, we are calling it a day and looking forward to tomorrow.
